Deep Dive into Project Indiana

Abstract Project Indiana (http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/)
is a new effort by SUN to develop a free and opensource
reference distribution of OpenSolaris jointly with the
community. It is an umbrella project that covers several
foss sub-projects. One of the porjects has to do with creating
a single LiveCD installable version of OpenSolaris. This is
Slim Install project and is based off the Live Media kit
technologies:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/livemedia/
Most of the Live Media stuff is the result of contribution
coming out of BeleniX.
Slim Install:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/caiman/Slim_Install/

This tutorial will focus on the various aspects of the effort,
covering the following topics:

- Short Overview of the Indiana effort and it's subprojects.
- Technology background. OpenSolaris LiveCD internals
- How the LiveCD is built and details of the toolchain,
packaging with demo
- Current development in the community and ongoing plans
- New developments and areas of community participation/contribution.
- How do I participate/contribute in the most happening OpenSolaris project:
Indiana ?
Pre-requisites Good awareness of packaging, build systems and *nix LiveCDs in general.
Speaker Profile I have been working in the Solaris Sustaining Engineering team at SUN Microsystems for the last 4 years covering various components of the operating system. My previous employment includes a 5yr stint at HCL Tech. Cisco ODC on Unix and networking technologies among others. My interest areas include hacking on Unix, Linux and OpenSource in general. I have played around with Linux right from the Slackware 0.1 days and have occasionally contributed to opensource projects in the form of bugfixes and RFEs, eg. TkZip http://www.woodsway.com/TkZip/, Xfce, e2fsprogs, supertux, Brian Kernighan's One true AWK (http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/bwk/awk.tar.gz). I have been on the Chennai LUG and later on BLUG and attended several BOF meets. I have been heavily involved with the OpenSolaris community for the last 2.5 years contributing to various opensource projects like: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/livemedia/ http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/loficc/ http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/caiman/Slim_Install/ http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/fox/ I have also been actively driving the Bangalore OpenSolaris user's group. 2 years back I came up with my own LiveCD distribution of OpenSolaris called BeleniX (http://www.belenix.org/) which today is one of the most popular OpenSolaris distros and is maintained by a group of folks both inside and outside of SUN. BeleniX is maintained entirely by spare time efforts from volunteers and is not a SUN project. The BeleniX website lives on genunix.org and project issue tracking is hosted off sarovar.org. BeleniX is developed and maintained entirely out of Bangalore, with the build system living in my home PC. I implemented several technologies required to make LiveCDs possible and missing from OpenSolaris. These various technologies are making their way into core OpenSolaris mostly as part of the Project Indiana. I am also involved in Project Indiana in the Slim Install subproject listed above as one of the core contributors. I have given talks at various meets and conferences like: 2007 OpenSolaris Developer Conference by German Unix User Group, berlin http://www.guug.de/veranstaltungen/osdevcon2007/abstracts.html Czech OpenSolaris User Group http://www.avc-cvut.cz/avc.php?id=4614&language=en_US At SUN Tech Days Singapore 2006 http://developers.sun.com/events/techdays/speakers.jsp Recently at ACM Bangalore Monthly Tech Talk http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/ug-bosug/2007-September/005107.html At GNUnify '07 http://ketan.padegaonkar.name/2007/01/29/gnunify-07-an-amazing-event.html And many other talks on OpenSolaris at various colleges and universities.
