How to work on OpenOffice.org

Abstract How does one go about working on and in OpenOffice.org? The establishment of the projects grouped under the "Native Language Confederation" (NLC), has helped greatly in promoting some OpenOffice.org development around the world. India boasts several NLC projects, and more are on the way. The focus of activity has been on localization, which is both comparatively easy for new developers and contributors, as well as crucial in promulgating OpenOffice.org use and in forming local communities. However, I would argue that more substantial work--core coding--needs to be considered, at least if the project is to fulfil its potential in India among developers and users. Otherwise, it risks remaining yet another consumer commodity. This kind of coding is not casually undertaken, not least because OpenOffice.org is famously difficult code and thus can require an investment of resources. The rewards, however, are great-for the developer, her organization, the project, India. This presentation goes over the basics for contributing to OpenOffice.org and also examines the tactics for forming regional development communities and ways in which they can work with the global community. This presentation should be of interest to all foss.in attendees. They should leave with a solid notion of the procedures for contributing to OpenOffice.org as well as the project's proceses and objectives, in India and globally.
Pre-requisites A basic understanding of OpenOffice.org--what it is, what it does--and a desire to involve oneself in the project.
