Abstract Although originally developed first for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher), today Linux runs on more than a dozen processor architectures. That makes it important to know how to write programs that runs on all the available architectures supported by Linux. This talk focuses on teaching endianess, packing, data alignment etc. and gives tips on how to take care of each of these aspect while programing. This talk is mainly for software developers.
Pre-requisites - Familiarity with C, C++ and assembly language
- Familiarity with at least one processor architecture
- Familiarity with using a debuggest and examining data ( preferably gdb)
Profile Jaimon Jose has been working with Novell for more than 8 years. After a small stint on NetWare and NT kernel, he moved onto Unix. Novell eDirectory was being ported onto various Unix flavors at that time. He was instrumental in designing and implementing directory host and system abstraction layer on Linux, Solaris, HPUX and Tru64. Currently he is the architect of eDirectory on a variety of platforms including AIX, Windows and NetWare. Jaimon is also working on a cross platform next generation directory which is being developed using distributed eXtreme Programming methodologies.
He spends his spare time by browsing opensource code, answering programming related and technical queries in various user groups and playing with Donnie.
