Abstract With the availability of readily available and econonomic internet connectivity more and more institutions are looking towards web-based learning and training for their students. Institutions looking at such a system will be concerned about the cost of aquisition, maintaining such a system, the amount of training required to make it truly usable by both the student and teachers, customisability and comprehensiveness.

Plone CMS is one of the most succesful stories in the open source arena. It is well known for its usability and flexibility, adaptability to work with existing systems and more importantly the polish that people expect with professionally done software. Plone also scores well with its standards compliance.

This talk will introduce the Plone CMS , considering those factors which are important in a learning environment, including
- document publishing
- workflows
- permissions
- creating new content types

We will also discuss some interesting case studies where plone has made an impact in the educational scenario.

The author wishes to follow this talk with a tutorial on setting up a basic plone site.

Profile Pradeep Kishore Gowda is an Engineer living in Bangalore.
He has been working on Free/Open Source Technologies since 1997. He works for Partecs, a company rooted firmly in Open Source philosophy.

His Open Source forays are into Linux, Python and Zope.
