| Abstract |
The Linux kernel is often accused of lacking a development roadmap. While it is true that there is no management committee dictating development directions, it is possible to get a good sense for where the kernel is going. This talk will discuss how the kernel development works, how 2.6 got to where it is now, and where it can be expected to go over the next year or two. |
| Pre-requisites |
The audience should understand the role that the kernel plays in the Linux system. Some familiarity with kernel programming concepts will help with sections of the talk, but is not absolutely necessary. |
| Profile |
Jonathan Corbet got his first look at the BSD Unix source back in 1981, when an instructor at the University of Colorado let him "fix" the paging algorithm. He has been digging around inside every system he could get his hands on ever since, working on drivers for VAX, Sun, Ardent, and x86 systems on the way. He got his first Linux system in 1993, and has never looked back. Jonathan is the co-author of the highly acclaimed book "Linux Device Drivers", and is the co-founder and executive editor of LWN.NET.
